The trees and plants in Lapland’s coniferous forests famous for their beauty also have great potential for utilisation in cosmetics and medical production.

Forest of Lapland, a Rovaniemi-based company recently launched its Davvi brand of cosmetic products made with local ingredients using competent research knowledge and cutting-edge technology.

The company produces extracts from the Arctic pines, oats, cranberries, lingonberries, bilberry and raspberries. Among 20 different documented extracts, each one has its useful and healthy effects on the face and body.

Forest of Lapland Managing Director Antti Kuivalainen and Eeva Moilanen, Professor of Department of Pharmacology, Tampere University. For example, the extracts from the inner knot of the Arctic pines rich in antioxidants and flavonoid can be used for treating eczema and skin infections. The bilberry extract which is full of antosyans is very good for human’s eyes.

At the moment, the company has introduced two skin-care product lines for men and women and has been testing new extracts for medical products.

“I used to own the second biggest environmental laboratory and environmental monitoring company in Finland. There we analysed natural ingredients. I became interested in the subject and saw business opportunities in producing extracts of Arctic forest plants for producing natural medicine and healthcare products as well as cosmetics,” said Forest of Lapland Managing Director Antti Kuivalainen.

“The raw materials are picked from the world’s largest natural picking area in Finnish Lapland,” Kuivalainen told the Daily Finland.

“We have a very effective extract from the inner knot of the Arctic pine. The extract can be used for difficult eczema and skin infections. We have also a very powerful extract made from the bark of the Arctic pine extremely rich in antioxidants and containing a lot of flavonoids,” said Kuivalainen, adding that he would like to mention bilberry extract which is rich in antosyansan very good for eyes.

Various compounds found in the plants in Lapland turn out to be lucrative for the modern cosmetics industry which is currently looking for an alternative to synthetic materials.

In fact, the thousand-year natural selection of the Finland’s northernmost forests has nurtured more mould- and bacteria-resistant plants than other regions in the world. Beside, having gone through constant photosynthesis round the clock under the heat of nightless summer in Lapland, local plants have developed plenty of antioxidants and protective substances.

Forest of Lapland believes in great potential of the bio resources contributing in the global sustainable development. “Consumers all over the world now prefer natural products to synthetic ones,” Kuivalainen said.
