Germany automaker Mercedes-Benz's U.S. branch is recalling nearly 43,000 Smart band two cabrio and coupe cars in the U.S. market, because of a potential fire risk in the engine compartment.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recall information, "the rear insulation mat in the engine compartment may deform, deteriorate, and loosen over time, allowing the mat to contact hot exhaust system components. If the mat contacts hot exhaust system components, it can increase the risk of fire."

The recall covers 42,781 Smart for two cabrio and coupe cars from the 2008 and 2009 model years.

According to the NHTSA, they started an investigation into the problem in 2016, and by far 27 cases of engine fires in the cars with one injury have been reported.

As a solution, parent company Mercedes-Benz USA will notify owners of the recall, and dealers will replace the rear insulation mat with an improved one. The recall is expected to start in July.
