Helsingin Energia (Helen) is assessing the possibility of building a bioenergy heating plant in the Patola district of Helsinki at a site already being used by Helen for power and heat generation, said an official press release.

The heating plant planned for Patola will require a revision of the current town plan to enable construction of a second plant at that site.

A presentation and public meeting on revising the town plan for local residents was held on Tuesday at the Oulunkylä Coeducational School.

Helen is preparing to discontinue the use of coal for heat generation by 2029 in accordance with the government’s policy. Biomass is the fastest way to replace coal.

The bio-heating plant being planned in Patola will have a capacity of producing 120MW power using pellets as the main fuel.

The proposed plant would be set up next to an existing oil/natural gas-fired heating plant of Helen.

The participation and assessment scheme and materials (illustrative drawings and completed reports) on the project will be displayed between 19 November and 10 December, said the press release.
