A total of 1,059 students from 83 countries have been admitted to international master’s programmes of the University of Helsinki beginning in autumn.

A record number of 4,704 applications for the programmes were received this year. The share of those who have been finally admitted is 25.6%, said a press release.

The number of the admitted students posts a 28% rise year-on-year.

“We have worked hard to make the university an attractive option to high-quality applicants by investing in the content and quality of the programmes, enhancing the application process, increasing the effectiveness of marketing and offering a good grant scheme,” said Sini Saarenheimo, head of the University of Helsinki’s Admission Services.

The University of Helsinki offers 35 international master’s programmes. The language of instruction in these programmes is English, but in many of them you can also pursue the studies in Finnish and/or Swedish.

The most popular programmes this year were the Master’s Programme in Data Science and the Master’s Programme in Environmental Change and Global Sustainability.

Students from both Finland and other countries pursue studies in the international programmes. Of those admitted to the programmes beginning in autumn 2020, 37.4% were from Finland.

Alongside Finland, the highest number of admitted students came from China, the USA and India.

To attract high-quality applicants, the university awards grants to students from non-EU and non-EEA countries so as to cover their tuition fees.

A total of 26 students of 16 different nationalities were awarded grants this year. The amount of an individual grant varies from €13,000 to €18,000.
