Helsinki University ranks 100 most prestigious in world

The University of Helsinki has improved its placing in the Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings, said a press release of the university.

The University of Helsinki has been ranked 91–100 in the Times Higher Education (THE) World Reputation Rankings.

There are only four Nordic universities in the list: The University of Copenhagen and Uppsala University are both in the 91–100 batch, while Karolinska Institutet ranks 61–70. Only the 50 top ranked universities get exact placings.

University of Helsinki returned in the top 100 after two years.

The United States dominates the table with 44 universities, and Harvard University taking the top spot. In other words, almost half of the best ranked universities are from the US. Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford University came in on second and third places.

Overall, the results of the 2018 World Reputation Rankings are relatively stable, with the same US and UK universities claiming the top eight places.

The Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings is one of the three most valued reputation rankings in the world.

THE rankings are created using the world’s largest invitation-only academic opinion survey of senior, published academics. It uses United Nations data as a guide to ensure that the response coverage is as representative of world scholarship as possible. It is also evenly spread across academic disciplines.

In the survey, scholars are questioned at the level of their specific subject discipline. They name at most 15 universities that they believe are the best in each category (research and teaching), based on their own experience.

The tendency for a university to receive reputation votes from within its own region or country varies significantly. Asian universities tend to receive more votes from within their nation, while North American institutions get a mixture of votes from within and outside their country. Universities in Europe receive most of their votes from other nations.

While reputation is a subjective indicator, the universities at the top have many similar qualities: their research is high-quality and groundbreaking, and their education is innovative. All of the best placed universities have relationships with both local and global communities.
