The Facebook account of Lithuanian Defense Minister Raimundas Karoblis has been hacked and deleted, the country's Defense Ministry announced on Tuesday.

According to the announcement, Karoblis himself noticed the hack into his Facebook account on Monday evening.

Following the incident, the minister contacted the country's police and Facebook's administration.

"We have no doubts that this was an intentional and malicious act," the minister's public relations adviser Vita Ramanauskaite was quoted as saying in the announcement.

Lithuanian institutions have faced an increase in cyber attacks in recent years.

"Activity in cyber space has been increasing," Edvinas Kerza, deputy defense minister, told Lietuvos rytas TV on Tuesday.

Data from Lithuania's communications regulatory authority shows that specialists investigated almost 40,500 cyber incidents last year, 19 percent more than in 2015.
