Russia foils attempt to terror attack during May Day holidays

Russian law enforcement officers found and killed two gangsters in Dagestan Republic Tuesday, who plotted a terrorist attack during the upcoming May Day holidays, the National Anti-Terrorism Committee (NAC) said in a statement.

The two gunmen were ordered to lay down their arms and surrender, but they opened fire with automatic weapons and got killed in an exchange of fire, the NAC said.

The gangsters had links with an international terrorist organization and were preparing a terrorist attack during the May Day holidays, it said.

No law enforcement officers or civilians were hurt in the skirmish.

Dagestan in North Caucasus is a hotbed of insurgency as it is close to the conflict-ridden Middle East. Repeated violent attacks have plagued the region for years.
