Six people died in a head-on collision between two cars after one of them drove the wrong way on a state road junction in northern Italy, Italian news agency ANSA reported early on Monday.

The fatal crash, in which both cars caught fire, occurred Sunday night in the Valtellina area near the city of Sondrio in the northern Lombardy region, close to the border with Switzerland.

According to photos and video of the scene released by local media, firefighters and police were standing among several covered-up bodies lying on the asphalt road near two crushed and charred cars.

The victims, one driving a Fiat Panda and the other five aboard a Fiat 500X, were two women and four men aged 20-52.
