Birth rate remains low in country in Jan-June

The number of births was 2,006 lower than that of deaths in the country during January to June period this year, according to the Statistics Finland.

During January-July, 29,558 children were born, which is 1,691 fewer than in the corresponding period in 2016. The number of deaths was 31,564, which is 38 higher than one year earlier.

Country´s total population figure stood at 5,508,714 at the end of July

The total population, however, increased by 5,417 persons during January-July due to migration gain from abroad. The immigration exceeded emigration by 7,423.

A total of 15,031 persons immigrated to Finland from abroad and 7,608 persons emigrated from Finland in January to July. The number of immigrants was 2 173 lower and the number of emigrants 1,463 lower than in the corresponding period of the previous year.

In all, 4,652 of the immigrants and 4,991 of the emigrants were Finnish citizens.
