Birth rate remains low in Finland in Jan-Aug

A total of 32,253 children were born in the country during January-August, which is 1,768 fewer than in the corresponding period in 2017, according to Statistics Finland.

The number of deaths was 36,130 from January to August, which is 40 higher than the stipulated period of the previous year.

The number of births was 3,877 lower than that of deaths.

Country's preliminary population figure stood at 5,519,463 at the end of August.

The total population, however, increased by 6,333 persons during the first eight months in 2018.

The reason for the increase was migration gain from abroad, since immigration exceeded emigration by 10,210.

A total of 20,341 persons immigrated to Finland from abroad and 10,131 persons emigrated from Finland. The number of immigrants was 990 lower and the number of emigrants 1,088 higher than in the corresponding period of the previous year.

In all, 6,087 of the immigrants and 6,643 of the emigrants were Finnish citizens.
