A lawmaker of the opposition Perussuomalaiset (Finns Party) has been accused of sexually assaulting and harassing his female colleague in the parliament during a Christmas party last year.

Perussuomalaiset MP Teuvo Hakkarainen will face the charges as the female lawmaker of the Kansallinen Kokoomus (National Coalition Party) Veera Ruoho brought the allegations against him, reported National broadcaster Yle.

According to the allegation Hakkarainen 'forcibly' kissed Veera Ruoho.

The alleged assault took place at a cafe at parliament when Hakkarainen was leaving the Christmas party of Perussuomalaiset. He had grabbed Ruoho by the neck and attempted to kiss her, said the Yle report referring witness.

"His grip was such that I was scared for my neck and my mouth hurt as well," said Ruoho, who subsequently reported the incident to police, according to Yle.

The Prosecutor decided to file charges against the lawmaker last week and the trial will be held at Helsinki District court, the Yle report added.
