UNSC mourns death of Cote d'Ivoire ambassador

The Security Council on Thursday mourned the death of Bernard Tanoh-Boutchoue, Cote d'Ivoire's ambassador to the United Nations (UN) and a member of the UN Security Council.

At the beginning of Thursday morning's meeting, the Security Council observed a minute of silence in his memory. "We will recall him with great respect and appreciation," said Peru's UN Ambassador Gustavo Meza-Cuadra, the current council president.

Tanoh-Boutchoue, who became a member of the Security Council on Jan. 1, 2018, died suddenly on Wednesday at the age of 67, leaving behind his wife and three children.

Before his job as UN ambassador, Tanoh-Boutchoue was his country's ambassador to various countries, including Russia, Egypt and Sudan.

From 2003 to 2008, he served as director of the United Nations and International Organizations Department in the Foreign Ministry of his country. Before that he served as counsellor in his country's Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York.
