Three Chinese tourists were killed and eight others wounded on Tuesday in a traffic accident on Egypt's Cairo-Alexandria highway north of the country, the Chinese Embassy to Egypt told Xinhua.

A travel van carrying a group of 11 Chinese tourists overturned into a canal at the desert road, said Guo Hualong, director of the counselor affairs at the Chinese Embassy to Egypt, noting that the injured have been sent to two nearby hospitals.

Guo noted that the tourist group was in Egypt in a tour organized by a Shenzhen-based travel agency.

The Egyptian local media said the van's overturn was mainly caused by a three-wheeled motorized rickshaw, known in Egypt as "tuk-tuk."
