At least 10 people were confirmed killed following a robbery attack on two commercial banks in southern Nigeria's town of Igarra, according to local media on Friday.

Four security personnel attached to the banks were among the dead victims of the Thursday evening attack in the town located in Akoko Edo area of Nigeria's Edo State, the official News Agency of Nigeria reported.

The armed robbers had earlier invaded a police station in the area, before proceeding to wreak havoc in the banks, some local sources said.

A community secretary Folorunso Dania said the police station was set ablaze by the armed robbers.

Edo State police spokesman Chidi Nwabuzor, who also confirmed the incident, said the police had already launched an investigation to apprehend the suspects.

In November 2015, at least six people were killed when armed robbers raided the same town.
