Industrial turnover contracts by 10.4% in April

The industrial turnover of Finland decreased by 10.4 percent in April year-on-year, due to the drop in oil prices and the exceptional situation caused by the COVID-19, reported Xinhua quoting Statistics Finland on Monday.

Meanwhile, seasonally adjusted turnover in industry dropped 3.0 percent from March this year.

Of the main industries, turnover decreased the most in the chemical industry, by 22.7 percent, compared with the same period in 2019, said Statistics Finland.

The turnover of manufacturing in the other main industries in April was also affected by the impacts of the COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus.

The turnover in the textile, clothing and leather industry was 14.8 percent lower and that in the forest industry was 14.3 percent lower than in April a year earlier. In addition, the turnover in electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply decreased by 12.2 percent, and in the food industry by 9.2 percent.

Turnover grew slightly only in mining and quarrying industries, up 0.3 percent from April 2019.

In addition, turnover and sales volume in total trade dropped by 6.2 percent in April 2020, compared with April 2019, said Statistics Finland.

Some industrial figures of March 2020 were also unveiled on Monday. According to Statistics Finland, export turnover plunged in March the most in the forest industry, by 22.5 percent from one year earlier.

Furthermore, in the chemical industry, the export turnover fell by 16.9 percent, and in the textiles, clothing and leather industry by 9.0 percent from March 2019.

In contrast, the export turnover of mining and quarrying grew the most in March, by 11.4 percent, in the food industry, by 3.9 percent, and in the electrical and electronics industry, by 2.8 percent year-on-year.
