Number of open job vacancies rises in Q2

There were 36,800 open job vacancies in the country in the second quarter of 2017 compared to 30,600 open job vacancies one year before, according to Statistics Finland.

The number of job vacancies increased mainly in the major regions of Southern Finland and Helsinki-Uusimaa.

The reference period of the data is June 1.

In the second quarter of 2017, in all, 26,200 or 71 per cent of the job vacancies were in establishments owned by private enterprises. One year earlier, the corresponding share was 77 per cent.

The number of open job vacancies increased compared to the previous year particularly in large establishments with at least 50 employees (+3,300).

When examined by the industries of the establishments, job vacancies increased most in the industry groups of public administration, education, human health, and social work activities (O-Q), and manufacturing, mining and quarrying, and other manufacturing activities (B-E).

In the second quarter, 13 per cent of all job vacancies were part-time, which is 14 percentage points lower than one year earlier.

The share of fixed-term positions in all open job vacancies was 33 per cent, which is 10 percentage points lower than in the same quarter one year ago.

Employers estimated that 54 per cent of the open job vacancies were hard to fill, while one year earlier, such posts made up 50 per cent of open vacancies. For example, establishments in construction and trade had plenty of jobs considered hard to fill.
