Measured by tonnes, trucks transported three per cent less goods on domestic and international routes in 2020 compared to that in the previous year, according to the Statistics Finland.

Transport performance, in turn, improved three per cent.

In 2020, trucks transported a total of 259 million tonnes of goods on domestic routes, posting a year-on-year fall of three per cent. The total length of transport journeys made was 1.8 billion kilometres, posting a four per cent slide from that in the previous year.

The transport performance totalled nearly 28 million tonne-kilometres or four per cent more than that in the previous year.

Tonne-kilometre describes the volume of transport and is obtained from the transported volume of goods given in tonnes and the length of the transport journey in kilometres.

Professional or licensed transport accounted for 86 per cent of the total volume of transported goods and for 96 per cent of the transport performance. The share of licensed transport increased slightly in both cases compared to that in 2019.

In 2020, trucks transported a total of 2.9 million tonnes of goods on international routes, marking a year-on-year slide of 33 per cent. The performance of international transportation totalled 1.8 billion tonne-kilometres, or 14 per cent less than that in the previous year.
