German carmaker Volkswagen is making good progress with the upgrading of diesel motors, a company spokesperson said on Monday.

Around 90 percent of the Wolfsburg-based firm's vehicles affected by the diesel emission scandal had already been modified in Germany.

Speaking to Xinhua, a representative for Volkswagen specified that the figure cited applied to cars with the diesel motor type EA189 which had been re-called. For all of the Volkswagen Group's brands affected by the scandal (Volkswagen, Audi, Seat and Skoda) in Germany, the upgrading quote was just under 90 percent.

The representative added that Volkswagen was confident it would achieve its goal of completing the upgrades in the course of the fall.

Volkswagen admitted to charges by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for having installed illegal software to falsify emissions levels in roughly 11 million diesel vehicles back in September 2015.

Europe's largest carmaker recently earmarked another 2.5 billion euros (2.9 billion U.S. dollars) in funds to tackle the resulting crisis, taking the total cost of the scandal to more than 25 billion euros.
