More enterprises close in 2021 Q2, open in Q3

The number of enterprise closures was 15.5 per cent higher in April to June 2021 than twelve months earlier, according to Statistics Finland.

Meanwhile, there were 1.1 per cent more enterprise openings in July to September, 2021 than in the corresponding period of 2020.

There were 9,515 enterprise openings in July to September 2021, which was 1.1 per cent more enterprise openings than in the corresponding period of 2020.

Examined by main industry, most enterprise openings were recorded in professional, scientific and technical activities. The number of enterprise openings in this industry was 1,587.

The number of enterprise openings was next highest in construction (1,249) and trade (1,055). Compared to the July to September period of 2020, the number of enterprise openings increased most in construction and decreased most in the main industry of trade.

Examined by region, the highest number of enterprise openings in the third quarter of 2021 was recorded in Uusimaa, 3,754 enterprises. The number of enterprise openings was next highest in Pirkanmaa (953).

The number of enterprise openings grew most in relative terms in Kymenlaakso (19.3 per cent) and decreased most in relative terms in the region of Central Ostrobothnia (12.6 per cent) from the year before.

According to Statistics Finland, there were 6,112 enterprise closures in April to June 2021 and the number was 818 or 15.5 per cent higher compared to the corresponding period in 2020.

Examined by main industry, the highest numbers of enterprise closures were recorded in the main industry of professional, scientific and technical activities (984), trade (941) and construction (684).

Examined by region, most enterprise closures were recorded in Uusimaa, 2,295 enterprises. The number of enterprise closures was next highest in Pirkanmaa (556). Compared to the corresponding period of the year before, enterprise closures increased in relative terms most in Kainuu (53.5 per cent) and decreased most in South Savo (3.8 per cent).
