US chip manufacturer Qualcomm is entering a long-term partnership with Germany's Volkswagen to develop automated driving technology, the Wolfsburg-based carmaker said, reported dpa.

Qualcomm's so-called system-on-a-chip will be used in various new Volkswagen models "from the middle of the decade," as VW's software division Cariad announced on Tuesday.

Volkswagen CEO Herbert Diess travelled to Qualcomm's headquarters in San Diego in mid-April, where they agreed to the conditions of the deal.

In January, VW announced that it would seek support from Bosch for software for autonomous driving. Bosch, in turn, also intends to strengthen its position in this area through acquisitions.

Diess said that all group vehicles that will later receive standardized software from Cariad will be equipped with Qualcomm technology.
