German carmaker Volkswagen has joined other companies that want to put their advertising on Twitter on hold following the takeover by US tech billionaire Elon Musk, reported dpa.

The car manufacturer cited Twitter's announcement on Friday that it would revise its advertisement guidelines as the reason for the halt.

The VW Group has "recommended its brands to pause their paid activities on the platform until further notice," it said. "We are monitoring the situation closely and will decide on the next steps depending on developments."

Earlier, US car manufacturer General Motors and British cereal company General Mills announced it was halting advertisements on the social media platform.

Volkswagen subsidiary Audi confirmed on Thursday it would halt ads and continue to evaluate the situation.
