BMW sold around 2.4 million cars in 2022, almost 100,000 fewer than in the previous year. However, sales of fully electric vehicles more than doubled, the carmaker announced in Munich on Wednesday, reported dpa.

As a result, the share of all-electric BMWs and Minis was close to 10% of total sales. The target for the current year is 15%, the company said.

Orders for the e-models BMW i4, iX, iX1 and i7 were very high, a spokesperson said. She did not comment on incoming orders for the iX3 and the Mini Cooper SE.

Semiconductor shortages, coronavirus lockdowns in China and inflation in Europe all slowed production and demand last year.

BMW's core brand sold 2.1 million cars, down from 2.2 million a year earlier. "We are very proud that the BMW brand remains number one in the global premium segment," the group said, a reference to Stuttgart-based rival Mercedes-Benz, which had previously been number one for several years.
