Number of open job vacancies decreases in Q3

There were 42,400 open job vacancies in the third quarter of 2023, while the figure was 59,000 one year before, according to Statistics Finland.

These data described the situation on the first day of September.

In the third quarter, open job vacancies decreased significantly in the major regions of Western Finland (6,500) and Helsinki-Uusimaa (6,100) compared to one year earlier.

Industry-specific changes took place in the number of job vacancies, the most important of which were a considerable decrease in the number of jobs in industry and in information and communication, and a decrease in construction.

Open job vacancies have decreased from one year ago especially in the private sector (14,700).

In the third quarter of 2023, altogether 72 per cent or 30,400 job vacancies were in establishments owned by private enterprises. Open job vacancies decreased considerably in the private sector (14,700) compared to one year earlier.

In the third quarter, 26 per cent of all job vacancies were fixed-term, which was four percentage points higher than in the corresponding period of the year before. The share of part-time jobs-term positions in all open job vacancies was 19 per cent, which is more or less the same as in the corresponding quarter one year ago.

Employers estimated that 56 per cent of the open job vacancies were hard-to-fill, while the corresponding share was 64 per cent one year earlier. For example, there were plenty of jobs considered hard to fill in establishments of human health and social work activities in the tasks of practical nurses and registered nurses, and in establishments of transportation and storage.
