Finland sees lower grain harvest in 2023

The cereal harvest in Finland was about three million tons in 2023, which was 16% below the ten-year average, according to the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke).
The total production was mostly affected by the decreased barley harvest. The organic cereal harvest was 142 million kilos, accounting for roughly 5% of the total cereal harvest.
A total of 1.066 million tons of barley was produced in last year and the amount was almost a third smaller than the ten-year average.
The wheat harvest (0.740 million tons) was roughly a tenth smaller than the average harvest. In contrast, the rye harvest (0.090 million tons) was almost a tenth larger than the average harvest, whereas the oat harvest of roughly a billion kilos was at the average level.
The pea harvest was the largest in history for the second year in succession at roughly 90,000 tons. However, the broad bean harvest has fallen from 40 million kilos five years ago to about 11,000 tons.
Compared to the previous year, Barley production reduced by 24% in 2023 while oats production reduced by 14%, wheat production reduced by 11%, Turnip rape and rapeseed reduced by 28%, Potato by 7%, peas by 4% and broad bean reduced by 42%.
The production of rye, however, increased by 41% in 2023 compared to 2022.
The 2023 organic cereal harvest totaled 142,000 tons, which was 21% lower than the production in 2022.
The production of organic barley reduced by 19%, organic oats by 19%, organic wheat by 21%, organic broad bean by 41% and organic potatoes by 9%.
The production of organic rye, however, increased by 17%, organic rape and turnip rape by 8% and organic peas by 15%.
