The Olkiluoto 2 (OL2) nuclear power plant will resume electricity generation on October 6 at a reduced capacity, said owner of the plant Teollisuuden Voima Oyj (TVO) in a press release on Friday.

The power generation will resume at a reduced capacity of 725 MW, down from its full output of 890 MW following the installation of a spare generator rotor.

Because the root cause of the rotor damage is still unclear, the unit will stay on reduced power level to limit the risk of failure. The reduced production is estimated to continue for several months.

The spare rotor being used at OL2 is the last available in TVO’s stock.

Therefore TVO operates the unit on reduced power level based on conservative analysis to ensure electricity production.

Electricity production at the Olkiluoto 2(OL2) nuclear power plant remained suspended since September 9 due to increased moisture detected in the generator of the turbine plant.

The root cause of the issue is still under investigation.
