Energy consumption grows by 2% in H1

Total energy consumption in January to June amounted to 665 petajoules (PJ), which was two per cent more than one year before, according to Statistics Finland.

The cold early part of the year was reflected in energy demand in the first quarter of the year, when total energy consumption increased by 8 per cent.

In the second quarter of the year, total energy consumption was 5 per cent lower than in the previous year.

The consumption of renewable energy went up by six per cent in January to June. The production of wind power grew by 12 per cent.

The combined consumption of fossil fuels and peat decreased by four per cent from the previous year. Consumption of hard coal decreased by 36 per cent.

Total electricity consumption was 43 terawatt hours (TWh) or eight per cent lower than in January to June of last year.

Carbon dioxide emissions from the energy use of fuels decreased by five per cent from the previous year.
