Extraction of domestic natural resources drop in 2023

Extraction of domestic natural resources fell by 9 per cent in 2023 from the year before, according to Statistics Finland.

A total of nearly 220 million tonnes of natural resources, or domestic extraction, were utilised in 2023.

Exports and imports of raw materials and processed products also decreased.

Domestic material consumption, which takes into account domestic extraction, imports and exports, amounted to 223 million tonnes in 2023.

Domestic extraction from nature was nearly 21 million tonnes lower in 2023 than in the year before.

The volume of domestic extraction decreased most for non-metallic minerals.

Total imports of raw materials and processed products amounted to 44 million tonnes and total exports to 40 million tonnes in 2023.

Compared to 2022, domestic material consumption decreased most in relative terms for fossil energy materials.

In absolute numbers, consumption of non-metallic minerals decreased most.
