Cargo handling at Helsinki Port rises in Jan-Sep period

Cargo handling at the Port of Helsinki increased by 2.1% in the January-September period of this year compared to the stipulated period of the previous year, said the Port Authority in a press release on Monday.

Goods were transported in particular by trucks, lorries and trailers. The volume of passenger traffic remained high even after the busy summer season.

From January to September, cargo traffic through the Port of Helsinki amounted to a total of 10.6 million tonnes, increasing by 2.1% from the corresponding period in the previous year.

Of the total amount of cargo traffic, 4.8 million tonnes was in import (+3.2%), and 5.6 million tonnes in export (+3.2%).

The Port of Helsinki is specialised in unitised cargo traffic, goods travel through the port in sea containers, trucks and trailers, in particular.

A total of 9.3 million tonnes of unitised cargo were transported (+6.7%) through the port.

Container traffic was 0.7% above the previous year measured in tonnes, but rubber-wheeled traffic in particular was strong and increased by 9.2% compared to the corresponding period the previous year.
