The City of Helsinki, Finland’s largest employer will have roughly 3,500 summer job and substitute vacancies across the City’s different divisions and enterprises this year, said the city in a press release on Monday.

The application period for the summer jobs of the City of Helsinki has started and the highest number of jobs available will be in January and February. New vacancies will be available weekly.

People can apply for summer jobs in Helsinki through the City’s recruitment system at helsinkirekry.fi.

The application period is specified separately for each job. New jobs will be posted almost weekly.

Many of the City’s summer jobs do not require previous work experience – studies in the relevant field and a willingness to learn are more important.

Summer employees are hired for the care industry, as planning interns, for kitchen work, for various office and customer service duties, and as children’s and young people’s hobby and camp activity instructors, etc.

Additionally, Stara seeks gardeners and park workers for seasonal work between April and October, for example.

The city is particularly looking for students and professionals in relevant fields to work in the Social Services, Health Care and Rescue Services Division and the Urban Environment Division.

About one thousand of the City’s summer jobs are intended for young people.

“Our goal is to provide young people with an opportunity to have their first summer job experience. In particular, we want to promote the employment of people under the age of 18, as there are usually fewer summer jobs available for them,” said Head of the Availability of Personnel and Employer Image Unit Tarja Näkki.

The City has more than 700 summer jobs available for people under the age of 18.

Additionally, the Siisti kesä! (‘Tidy Summer!’) project offers nearly 300 summer jobs for 16–20-year-olds. The application period for these jobs starts on 3 February and ends on 24 February.

The City’s summer jobs for young people can be applied for by all young people who have completed primary and lower secondary education and not turned 18 by the start of the summer job. The City of Helsinki also offers summer jobs for young people who have support needs in terms of employment.

The City is also hiring young people who do not yet have work experience for the Siisti kesä! project. Employees hired as part of the project help keep parks, squares, kerbsides, sports facilities and public beaches tidy.

There are also team leader positions available in the Siisti kesä! project for those interested in developing managerial skills. People can apply for a team leader position after turning 18, and the position involves supervising the work of younger summer employees. Having a driving licence and being able to drive team members to different locations is considered an advantage for team leader positions.

In previous years, the most popular summer job positions in terms of the number of applications have included those of library assistant, environmental worker, construction intern, sanitation worker and assistant youth instructor.

Every year, the Social Services, Health Care and Rescue Services Division also looks for summer substitutes, especially for practical nurse, nurse and public health nurse positions.
