Finland sees highest number of bankruptcies in 28 years in January

A total of 381 bankruptcy proceedings were instigated in Finland in January 2025, which is 83 more than in the corresponding period one year earlier, according to Statistics Finland.

On the monthly level the number of bankruptcies has last been this high in October 1997.

The number of staff-years in enterprises that filed for bankruptcy totalled 1,611, which is 495 staff-years more than in January 2024.

In January 2025, the 12-month moving annual change in enterprises that filed for bankruptcy was eight per cent.

The number of bankruptcies of natural persons, that is, enterprises practising entrepreneurial activity under their own name or a registered trading name more than doubled from one year ago in January.
