DB Schenker started deliveries by electric-assisted freight bicycle in Helsinki on Tuesday, said a press release issued by the Port of Helsinki on Friday.
The aim of the bicycle trial is to provide solutions to challenges in urban logistics in the congested city centre, such as large numbers of delivery vehicles in narrow streets, the coordination of pedestrian and bicycle traffic with deliveries and the emissions resulting from urban traffic.
The freight bicycle will be primarily used to deliver online purchases and other small deliveries to DB Schenker’s collection points and local businesses.
The local terminal facilities at the Olympia Terminal, out of which the bicycle will operate in the inner city area of Helsinki, are being provided by the Port of Helsinki. The trial is set to continue until the end of August.
“The Port of Helsinki is pleased to be a part of innovative projects such as this bicycle delivery trial that seek new perspectives to logistical challenges,” said Kari Noroviita, Director of the Port of Helsinki on the collaboration with the logistics company.
Taking into account the environment, traffic and city residents, the freight bicycle is a good alternative for handling small deliveries in the inner city area, said the Port Director.
