President honours 29 mothers on Mother´s Day

The contributions of mothers to life received state recognition on Sunday with 29 mothers of the country being honoured by President Sauli Niinistö for their significant activities.

As in previous years, the president conferred a Medal First Class with Gold Cross of the Order of the White Rose of Finland to 29 mothers for their merits as educators.

The traditional decoration ceremony on the occasion, however, could not be organised due to ongoing coronavirus situation.

The decorations of both 2021 and 2020 are expected to be handed over at regional events organised by the Mannerheim League for Child Welfare on the Universal Children’s Day on 20 November.

The Chancery of the Orders of the White Rose of Finland and the Lion of Finland published the names of the 29 decorated mothers on 28 April.

This year marks the 75th time that Mother’s Day decorations are distributed in Finland.

President Sauli Niinistö in a statement congratulated all the awad-winning mothers marking the day.

“My warmest congratulations to all of the award-winning mothers,” said the Presideny.

“Each of you is worthy of our high regard. With your nurturing, support and understanding, you provide lifelong sustenance to your children. Together with your children, you are building the Finland of the future, which is no small task,” he added.

Mother's Day is celebrated across the world showing honour to mothers and motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society.

Mother’s Day, falling on the second Sunday in May, is an official flag day in Finland.

It is celebrated on different days in different parts of the globe, generally in March or May.

Mother's Day started to be observed in the United States in the early 20th century.
