Hulkko family's daughter becomes Helsinki Day baby

The newly born baby girl of Hulkko family became the Helsinki Day baby this year, said the City of Helsinki in a press release on Wednesday.

The City of Helsinki celebrates the first baby born was born on early Wednesday at 00.09 marking the founding anniversary of the city.

The new Helsinki resident weighed 3360 grams and was 51 centimeters long at birth.

As is tradition, City Mayor Juhana Vartiainen visited the family and the new baby at the Women’s Hospital on the morning of Helsinki Day.

“My warmest congratulations to the new Helsinki resident and the baby’s family! Our primary goal is to make it possible for all city residents to have a good, entertaining and sustainable life well into the future. This baby may live to see the Helsinki of the year 2100. We are working today to make the city enjoyable tomorrow,” said Vartiainen.

The family received a Finnish-made Huomenta blanket by Paapii Design and a silk baby bonnet by Ruskovilla.

The parents also received a bouquet of flowers and a letter of congratulations, according to which the baby will receive a gift cheque of €300 as soon as the baby has been baptised or entered into the population register.

The tradition of congratulating the first baby of Helsinki Day has been ongoing for almost 60 years: the first Helsinki Day baby was celebrated in 1965.

During the visit, Mayor Vartiainen greeted the midwives of the Women’s Hospital, which celebrates its 90th anniversary this year.
