International master’s programmes of the University of Helsinki have received a total of 2,946 applications for admission, posting an 83 per cent increase over the previous year.
The new Master’s Programme in Environmental Change and Global Sustainability has ranked among the most attractive programmes, said a press release.
The number of applications declined significantly last year largely due to the adoption of tuition fees for students from outside the EU and the EEA.
The number of applicants clearly exceeded the equivalent figures for 2016 when the tuition fees had yet not been introduced.
In 2016, non-EU and non-EEA applications accounted for 58 per cent of the all applications, whereas last year it was 57 per cent. Before the adoption of the tuition fees, approximately three quarters of all applications came from outside the EU and EEA. Finnish applicants accounted for 28 per cent of all the applicants in 2016, compared to 29 per cent last year.
As in the previous years, the largest numbers of applicants came from Pakistan, China and Ghana. There has also been a marked increase in applications from a number of countries including India, Columbia, Ecuador, Chile, Peru, Indonesia, the USA, Hong Kong, Russia and Vietnam.
This year admission applications have been received from a total of 127 countries.
