10,900 students offered places in Finnish higher Edu autumn session

A total of 10,900 students were offered admission in the autumn joint application to higher educational institutions in Finland, said the Finnish National Agency For Education in a press release on Friday.

A total of 44,900 applicants participated in the application, of which 24%, were offered admission.

More than half were offered admission to their first programme of choice. The joint application included programmes starting in January 2025.

Out of the qualified students, 10,700 got admission in the universities of applied sciences (Polytechnic Institutes) while 200 in the universities.

A total of 20 universities of applied sciences and four universities were involved in the autumn joint application.

Of the study options, 306 were to universities of applied sciences and 19 to universities.

Ninety seven percent of the applicants applied to universities of applied sciences while 1% applied to both, and 2% applied to universities alone.

Of the students that so far were offered a study place, 65% gained admission to their first programme of choice.

“Of those who applied to universities of applied sciences, 65% were accepted to their first programme of choice, and of the applicants to universities 96%,” said Senior specialist Topias Kähärä of the Finnish National Agency of Education

On average, applicants set 2.8 study options on the application form. In the autumn joint application, one can apply for six programmes.

A total of 37,500 applicants applied for programmes leading to a bachelor's or bachelor's degree and a master's degree.

Of them, 9,000 was accepted as a student. Moreover 17% or 1,800 applicants, were admitted to programmes leading to a master's degree.

The number of applicants for these programmes was 8,600.

This week, the applicants have been informed of the results of the autumn joint application.

The offer of admission must be accepted by 3:00 p.m. on November 28 at the latest. Admission can be offered from the waiting list until December 18.

The higher education institutions can organise additional application periods in November and December for study places that have remained vacant in the joint application.

The joint application to higher education degree programmes in English for studies beginning in autumn 2025 is from January 8 to January 22, 2025.
