Comprehensive schools' number on wane in Finland

A total of 78 comprehensive schools were closed down or merged with another educational institution in Finland in 2024, according to Statistics Finland.

There were 844 active providers of education and 3,103 educational institutions at the end of 2024. There were 1,974 active comprehensive schools.

The highest number of comprehensive schools were closed down or merged with another educational institution in the regions of Uusimaa and North Ostrobothnia.

Measured by the number of pupils, the biggest comprehensive schools were located in Uusimaa and Pirkanmaa.

In 2024, there were 330 active general upper secondary schools and 77 vocational institutions, which remained unchanged from the previous year.
