6% students discontinue study in 2022-2023 session

About six per cent of students attending education leading to a qualification or degree discontinued their studies and did not resume education leading to a qualification or degree in the academic year 2022/2023, according to Statistics Finland.

In general upper secondary education aimed at young people the discontinuation percentage was 2.9, in initial vocational education it was 9.8%, in university of applied sciences education (university of applied sciences degrees) 8.3% and in university education (Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees) 5.4%.

Discontinuation of education decreased or remained unchanged in all sectors of education in the academic year 2022/2023.

Men discontinued their education leading to a qualification or degree altogether more often than women.

Men most commonly discontinued their university of applied sciences education and women their vocational education and training.

Of initial vocational education students aged under 25 altogether 8.4 per cent discontinued their education.

For new students having started studies in 2022, the discontinuation percentage was 5.7, or 0.6 percentage points lower than for the new students of the previous year.
