Early official results showed Monday that Ukrainian actor Volodymyr Zelensky won the country's presidential election by gaining 73.15 percent of the votes in the second round with over 95 percent of the votes counted.

A total of 24.52 percent of Ukrainians voted for incumbent President Petro Poroshenko, while the rest voters spoilt their ballot papers, the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) said in a statement on its website.

These results are similar to the results of the national exit poll unveiled late Sunday that suggested that Zelensky secured a victory after gaining 73 percent of the vote, a record for presidential candidates in Ukraine's history.

While commenting on the voting, the head of the CEC Tetiana Slipachuk said the elections were free and fair.

"The second round of voting in the presidential elections in Ukraine is a very good measurement and an example of how the election should be held," Slipachuk told reporters at a press conference in Kiev.

There were no violations of law at the election, which could affect the results of the voting, Slipachuk said.

Voting in the second round of the presidential election in Ukraine was held on April 21, since none of the candidates got more than 50 percent of the votes in the first round on March 31.

The results of the second round are set to be announced by the CEC by May 1 and the new president is expected to take office no later than June 3.
