A Stockholm-bound flight of Latvia's airBaltic national carrier made an emergency landing at Riga Airport on Monday, the airport's spokeswoman Laura Karnite informed.

The flight, which had departed from Riga for Stockholm shortly after noon, reported a mechanical issue while en route to the Swedish capital. The airport's staff launched the standard safety procedure to ensure a safe landing for the aircraft.

The plane landed successfully at Riga Airport at around 1:35 p.m.

The airBaltic representatives informed later that the flight had to return to Riga because of a problem with cabin pressure. Although it was still possible to proceed with the flight at a lower altitude, the captain decided to return to Riga for the passengers' safety.

The Latvian-state controlled airBaltic operates commercial flights from Riga, Tallinn and Vilnius to more than 70 destinations.
