The European Union will inaugurate on Sunday the headquarters of its mission in Kuwait, a Kuwaiti official said Thursday.

Walid Al-Khubaizi, Kuwaiti assistant foreign minister for European affairs, said in a statement that the event signals a crucial stage in the history of bilateral relations between Kuwait and the EU.

The Kuwait-EU relations have greatly advanced with greater coordination in bilateral and international affairs, he added.

High Representative of the EU Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini will attend the inauguration ceremony, Al-Khubaizi noted.

Mogherini will meet senior officials of Kuwait and discuss a host of global issues, the Kuwaiti official said.

Last year, the EU announced the plan to open an embassy in Kuwait, bringing the total number of the bloc's missions throughout the world to 142.
