Two men have died after a light aircraft crashed in northern Cyprus, authorities confirmed on Tuesday.

According to local media, the ultra-light training plane which belongs to the Turkish Cypriot Federation of Air Sports came down just after midday.

Emergency services remain at the scene of the crash in the northeastern rural area of Gecitkale Airport (Lefkoniko), where the blue single-engine plane crashed near the runway.

As the crash occurred during fine weather conditions, its cause is still under investigation.

The men's bodies have been removed from the airport and next of kin notified.

Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci sent his condolences to the families of the two men, saying he was 'greatly saddened' by the news.
