Ilona Lice, chief executive officer (CEO) of Riga International Airport, announced her resignation on Wednesday with immediate effect citing health reasons, the airport said in a statement.

Lice has been CEO of Riga Airport since March 2017.

According to Lice, even though the ongoing COVID-19 crisis has brought the airport's operations to a virtual standstill and its revenues have plummeted by 98 percent, the airport's excellent financial performance in previous years has enabled the company to reduce layoffs and ensure the best possible conditions for those who continue to work at the airport.

Last week, Riga Airport said it had to lay off around 500 of its 1,200 staff. The airport also slashed its investment plans by 85 percent and reduced operating costs by 60 percent.
