The EU is on the edge as to whether it'll continue being a two-speed institution - with countries with and without the euro currency - or whether there will be more than two speeds, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico announced on Tuesday referring to the so-called multi-speed EU proposal.

Fico said that Slovakia wants to be a partner of the the six founding countries of the EU.

"If it happens that in addition to the euro and non-euro areas, some third or fourth speeds emerge, Slovakia will be obliged to be at the core of this and cooperate with the strong countries, such as Germany, the Netherlands and France," said the prime minister, adding that he considers this to be the greatest challenge for Slovakia at the moment.

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker's White Paper sets out the main challenges and opportunities for Europe in the coming decade, presenting five scenarios for how the EU could evolve by 2025, depending on how it chooses to respond.
