Additional police officers were called in on Thursday afternoon to quell a protest by migrants inside one of Malta's detention centers.

Banging the windows with hands, hundreds of migrants in the Hal Far detention center chanted "we want freedom" in a hours-long protest.

A police spokesman told Xinhua that no one was arrested in the wake of the protest and no additional force was required.

An ambulance as well as a number of medical teams were on site in case they were required.

The detention center is just opposite to an open center which is now on lockdown after a number of migrants tested positive for the coronavirus.

Migrants arriving on Malta's shores are kept in the detention center until they are processed by the local authorities.
