The death toll from the novel coronavirus in The Netherlands rose by 53 in the last 24 hours, bringing the total tally to 5,643, the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) announced on Friday.

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases grew by 200 to a total of 43,681, while the number of hospitalized people rose by 35 to a total of 11,492.

Also on Friday, the Dutch Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) revealed that in the first nine weeks of the COVID-19 pandemic from March 9 until May 10, nearly 36,000 people had died in the country.

"A total of 5,522 deceased COVID-19 patients were reported to the RIVM for this period," the CBS said. "Because not all deceased people in The Netherlands have been tested for COVID-19, the actual number of people who died from the coronavirus could be higher," it said.
