A major fire broke out earlier on Saturday in a cathedral in the western French city of Nantes. Firefighters have contained the blaze, according to local emergency services, reported Xinhua.

Images from the scene show fire and smoke billowing from inside the St. Peter and St. Paul Cathedral, which was built in the 15th century. The main stained glass windows between the two towers of the cathedral were badly damaged.

Around 60 firefighters were dispatched to fight the fire, according to local media reports.

The surrounding area of the cathedral was sealed off and local authorities have warned people to stay away from the scene.
