A former lawmaker of the Russian State Duma, or the lower house of parliament, was killed on Thursday during a shooting in central Kiev, local police said.

Denis Voronenkov was killed at around midday local time by a gunman who fired several shots at him, Olexandr Vakulenko, the deputy head of the National Police of Ukraine, told reporters.

The attacker and Voronenkov's bodyguard were wounded in the shooting and taken to the hospital, Vakulenko said.

The 45-year-old Voronenkov served as a lawmaker from the Communist Party in Russian State Duma between 2011 and 2016.

In December 2016, he was given Ukrainian citizenship and moved to Kiev.
