A migrant was killed and eight others injured on Thursday morning when around 300 sub-Saharan migrants attempted to force their way into the Spanish North-African enclave of Melilla, Spanish state TV network RTVE reported, citing the Spanish Government Delegate in the city, reported Xinhua.

The victim was reported to have fallen from the border fence and died, despite the efforts of the Red Cross and Spanish Civil Guard to revive him, said the report.

Eight other migrants suffered minor injuries, while three Spanish Civil Guard members were also hurt in the incident, according to the report.

The attempt to scale the six-meter high fence happened on Thursday morning. As security forces intervened, around 30 were able to achieve their objective and enter into what is effectively Spanish and European Union soil, the report said.
