Almost 1,200 people marched across the city centre of Gera, in the state of Thuringia, in an unannounced demonstration against the coronavirus measures, reported dpa, quoting police.

The demonstrators loudly marched past the home of Gera's Mayor Julian Vornab on Tuesday evening.

"I was at home with my family. It was very loud, it felt like a very heated atmosphere, and it was not a nice situation, especially for my wife and children," Vornab said on Wednesday.

When asked if he felt threatened, Vonarb said: "The police were there, but not in proportion to the number of demonstrators," he said. Things can always escalate in this situation, he said, but stressed that he would not be intimidated.

Thuringia Premier Bodo Ramelow wrote on Twitter that marching up to politicians' homes is nothing other than intimidation.

In December, a demonstration took place in front of the residence of Saxony Health Minister Petra Köpping. Around 30 people protesting against the Covid-19 measures gathered there with torches and placards.
