Since the beginning of the war, the federal police have detected 64,604 war refugees from Ukraine in Germany, a spokesperson for the Federal Ministry of the Interior announced in Berlin on Tuesday, reported dpa.

That is about 14,000 more refugees than the day before.

The federal police are currently carrying out increased checks, but since there are no stationary checks at the EU's internal borders, "the number of war refugees entering Germany may in fact already be considerably higher," the spokesperson admitted.

Since the beginning of the Russian attack on Ukraine, more than 2 million people have already left the country, according to the UN refugee agency. So far, the neighbouring country Poland has taken in the most war refugees.
